Ranjan was the only son of his parents and had four elder sisters. He was born after years of prayers and wishes, so he became the center of his parents' affection. From early childhood, they showered him with excessive love and fulfilled every one of his demands. Whatever he asked for was provided immediately. Even if his sisters suffered because of his behavior, his parents never corrected him. Gradually, Ranjan became stubborn, arrogant, and self-centered. He refused to listen to anyone whenever his wishes were denied.
His parents believed that he would naturally become responsible as he grew older. However, they forgot that childhood is the most important stage in shaping a person's character. The habits and values developed during these early years remain with a person throughout life.
When Ranjan started school, he showed little interest in his studies. Instead, he enjoyed playing, teasing others, and creating mischief. Whenever he behaved badly, his teachers scolded him. The teachers appreciated hardworking and disciplined students, but Ranjan became jealous of them. Unable to trouble his teachers, he began harassing the sincere students. Eventually, the well-behaved children stopped associating with him, and he became friends only with lazy, mischievous, and undisciplined boys.
Children are greatly influenced by the company they keep. They cannot always distinguish between good and bad friends, which is why wise parents carefully observe their children's companions and guide them toward positive influences.
Although Ranjan's parents hired a private tutor to improve his academic performance, they paid little attention to his behavior and character. They believed that arranging extra lessons was enough to secure his future. Meanwhile, Ranjan's friends knew that his parents fulfilled all of his demands. They encouraged him to bring more money from home so they could buy street food together. Soon, Ranjan developed a habit of eating spicy snacks, fried foods, and junk food every day. If his father gave him less money, he would secretly steal from his mother's purse.
Before long, Ranjan no longer liked the simple, nutritious meals prepared at home. He constantly demanded food from restaurants and roadside vendors. If his mother refused to buy his favorite snacks, he would stubbornly refuse to eat and go to bed hungry. Unable to bear seeing him upset, his mother eventually gave in to his demands. She believed that eating something was better than eating nothing, but she failed to realize that unhealthy food causes far more harm than skipping a meal. Food should nourish the body and promote good health, not satisfy temporary cravings.
As time passed, the consequences of Ranjan's unhealthy eating habits became evident. His liver became enlarged, and he developed severe swelling in his abdomen. His condition worsened to the point that home treatment was no longer effective, and he had to be admitted to the hospital. After receiving proper medical care, his health gradually improved. However, as soon as he began recovering, he once again demanded spicy street food and rich snacks.
The doctors patiently explained to his mother that Ranjan's illness was caused by his unhealthy eating habits. They warned her that unless he strictly avoided such foods, he would never fully recover. Only then did his mother realize her mistake. She firmly prohibited junk food in the house and became strict about his diet. Seeing that his stubbornness no longer worked, Ranjan gradually stopped insisting on unhealthy food, and his health slowly improved.
In the hospital, another boy named Prabodh, who was about Ranjan's age, occupied the bed next to him. Like Ranjan, he loved spicy and oily food. Even though the doctors repeatedly warned him not to eat unhealthy snacks, he secretly continued eating them whenever he found an opportunity. Whenever Ranjan advised him to follow the doctors' instructions, Prabodh laughed and replied, "Doctors always tell us not to eat this or that. I'll eat whatever I want. At worst, I'll die one day anyway."
A few days later, the consequences of Prabodh's carelessness became frighteningly clear. Because he ignored the doctor's advice, his jaundice became severe, and he fell unconscious. The doctors discovered that his condition had worsened because he had continued eating unhealthy food. They scolded his parents, who stood before them in tears, begging, "Doctor, please forgive us. We made a mistake. Please save our child."
Prabodh remained unconscious for several days. He was given glucose drips and numerous injections before he finally regained consciousness. Watching his friend suffer left a deep impression on Ranjan. His mother gently said to him, "Now you have seen the result of ignoring proper dietary restrictions. If you avoid oily, spicy, and unhealthy food, you won't fall sick or need to stay in a hospital. A person who cannot control his tongue will continue to suffer from illness throughout life."
Prabodh's serious condition completely changed Ranjan's attitude. He realized that his mother's advice and the doctors' instructions were for his own good. From that day onward, he decided to eat only healthy food and take proper care of his body.
After returning home, Ranjan's mother paid special attention to preparing wholesome, nutritious meals. She stopped bringing fried and excessively spicy foods into the house and encouraged everyone in the family to eat a balanced diet. She also advised others that unhealthy food damages the stomach, contaminates the blood, and leads to many diseases. A simple, balanced diet is essential for maintaining good health.
Ranjan's experience taught him an important lesson: Food should be eaten for health, not merely for taste. Temporary pleasure from unhealthy food can lead to lifelong suffering. The story also reminds parents that while education is important, a child's character, habits, and values are shaped by proper guidance, discipline, and good company. By nurturing healthy eating habits and strong moral values from childhood, parents can help their children grow into responsible, healthy, and successful adults.
