Help Yourself First

Long ago, at the edge of a peaceful forest, stood an ancient temple that people visited every day to pray. Around the temple courtyard lived thousands of ants in a large colony. They had built their tiny homes beneath the old stone steps, where they lived happily as one big family.

Every morning, as the temple bells rang, the ants came out of their nests. They watched people fold their hands, light lamps, and offer flowers to God. The atmosphere was filled with peace and devotion.

The Queen Ant, who ruled the colony, was deeply influenced by everything she saw. She believed that praying was the answer to every problem. Soon she began spending hours every day sitting quietly with her eyes closed, repeating God's name instead of looking after the needs of her colony.

At first, no one questioned her decision.

"If God is pleased with us," the Queen often said, "He will protect us and fulfill all our wishes."

Many ants admired her devotion and began following her example. Instead of collecting food, repairing their tunnels, or preparing for difficult days, they spent more and more time praying. Gradually, the hardworking colony became lazy. Food stores became smaller, tunnels were left damaged, and fewer ants went out to gather supplies.

Among them lived a wise worker ant named Mani.

Mani respected prayer, but she also believed that God had given everyone hands, feet, and intelligence for a reason.

One afternoon she politely approached the Queen.

"Your Majesty," Mani said gently, "prayer gives us strength, but God also expects us to work. If we stop doing our duties, how will our colony survive?"

The Queen smiled confidently.

"You worry too much," she replied. "When God is happy with us, He will solve every problem. There is no need to tire ourselves."

Mani bowed respectfully, but she was not convinced.

Over the next few weeks, she noticed that the colony's condition continued to worsen. Young ants were becoming careless. Soldiers had stopped practicing. Food reserves were shrinking every day.

Again, Mani gathered her courage.

"Your Majesty," she said, "God helps those who help themselves. If we continue ignoring our responsibilities, we may regret it later."

The Queen frowned.

"You have very little faith," she answered. "Continue praying, and everything will be fine."

Mani quietly returned to work. Although very few ants joined her, she never stopped repairing tunnels, storing food, and encouraging others to stay prepared.

One day, a group of scout ants arrived with alarming news.

"Your Majesty!" they cried. "A huge army of red ants from the southern forest is marching toward our colony. They are conquering every nest in their path."

Fear spread through the colony.

The Queen immediately closed her eyes and began praying even harder.

"Do not panic," she announced. "God Himself will come and protect us."

Many ants sat beside her, repeating prayers instead of preparing for battle.

Mani became worried.

She gathered the remaining worker ants and soldiers.

"If we don't prepare now," she warned, "our homes and families will be lost. Let us strengthen the tunnels, move the children to safety, and get ready to defend ourselves."

Some ants listened to her, but many remained with the Queen, believing that a miracle would happen.

The next morning, the enemy army reached the colony.

Thousands of fierce red ants surrounded the entrance.

The Queen looked toward the sky, expecting divine help.

Instead, she saw frightened ants running in every direction.

The soldiers who had neglected their training could not defend the colony properly. Food stores were quickly destroyed, and several tunnels collapsed during the attack.

The Queen became terrified.

She cried out, "God, why have You abandoned us?"

Just then, Mani rushed toward her.

"Your Majesty," she said, "this is not the time to lose hope. Every ant who is able must stand together. We still have a chance if we act with courage."

The Queen hesitated.

For the first time, she realized that simply waiting had solved nothing.

She remembered Mani's words.

Without wasting another moment, she stood up and addressed the colony.

"My friends," she shouted, "I made a mistake. Prayer gives us courage, but courage must be followed by action. Let us protect our home together!"

The ants immediately regained their confidence.

The workers repaired damaged tunnels while the soldiers formed defensive lines. Others carried food and rescued young ants trapped inside the nests.

Even the oldest ants found ways to help.

Inspired by their unity, everyone worked with determination.

The battle continued throughout the day.

Although the enemy was stronger, they were surprised by the ants' teamwork and bravery. Every ant played an important role.

By sunset, the invading army realized they could not defeat such determined defenders.

Slowly, the red ants retreated into the forest.

The colony had survived.

That evening, the temple bells rang once again.

The Queen gathered every ant beneath the old stone steps.

With tears in her eyes, she turned to Mani.

"My friend," she said, "today you taught me a lesson I will never forget. I believed that faith alone could solve every problem. Now I understand that God blesses those who first fulfill their own responsibilities."

The entire colony applauded.

The Queen continued, "Prayer gives us strength, hope, and wisdom, but our hands and minds are gifts from God too. If we refuse to use them, we waste the very blessings we have been given. "From that day forward, the ants followed a new routine. Every morning they offered a short prayer, thanking God for another day.

Then they returned to their duties with energy and enthusiasm. Some collected food, others repaired tunnels, while the soldiers practiced defending the colony. The young ants learned that success comes from discipline, teamwork, and hard work.

Mani never considered herself a hero.

She simply smiled whenever she saw the busy colony working together.

Years later, travelers passing by the temple noticed that the ant colony was stronger and happier than ever before. It had become a symbol of wisdom, reminding everyone that faith and effort should always go hand in hand.

The Queen often shared her experience with the younger ants.

"Never wait for miracles while ignoring your responsibilities," she would say. "Pray with a sincere heart but also work with sincere hands. When faith and effort walk together, even the greatest challenges can be overcome."

And so, the little ant colony prospered for many generations, proving a timeless truth that people still remember today.

Moral: God helps those who help themselves. Faith gives us strength, but success belongs to those who combine prayer with hard work, responsibility, and courage.
