One day, a sincere disciple approached his guru with great respect. Folding his hands, he asked, "Master, I often hear different people describe life in different ways. Some say life is a constant struggle. Others call it a game, while a few describe it as a joyful celebration. Which of these is true?"

The guru smiled calmly and replied with great patience.

"My son, for those who have never found a true guide, life is indeed a struggle. For those fortunate enough to have a guru, life becomes a game because they understand its rules. But only those who faithfully follow the path shown by their guru gain the wisdom to experience life as a celebration."

Although the answer sounded profound, the disciple still looked unconvinced. The guru noticed the confusion on his face and said, "I can see that my words have not fully answered your question. Let me tell you a story. Listen carefully, and you will discover the answer yourself."

The disciple sat quietly while the guru began narrating the story.

Long ago, in a peaceful gurukul, three students had completed their education. Before leaving, they approached their guru with folded hands and requested, "Gurudev, please tell us what you would like us to offer as Guru Dakshina. We wish to express our gratitude for everything you have taught us."

The guru smiled gently. After remaining silent for a moment, he said, "If you truly wish to give me Guru Dakshina, bring me a sack full of dry leaves."

The three disciples exchanged delighted glances. They thought the task would be extremely easy. Dry leaves could be found everywhere in forests. Surely, collecting a sackful would take no time at all.

With confidence they replied together, "As you command, Gurudev."

Filled with enthusiasm, they set out toward a nearby forest.

However, when they reached the forest, they were astonished. Although it was surrounded by countless trees, there were hardly any dry leaves scattered on the ground. After searching for a long time, they could gather only a handful.

Perplexed, they wondered, "Where have all the dry leaves gone?"

Just then, they noticed a farmer walking along a nearby path. Thinking he might help them, they respectfully approached him.

"Sir," they said politely, "our guru has asked us to bring him a sack full of dry leaves. Could you kindly spare some for us?"

The farmer smiled apologetically.

"My children," he replied, "I would gladly help you, but I have already collected all the dry leaves from this area. I use them as fuel for cooking and keeping my family warm. They are very useful to me."

The disciples thanked him and continued on their journey.

Soon they entered a nearby village. They believed someone there would surely have plenty of dry leaves.

There they met a merchant and explained their purpose.

"Could you please give us a sack of dry leaves?" they requested.

The merchant shook his head.

"I'm sorry," he said. "I cannot. I collect dry leaves because they are sold to people who use them to prepare organic manure. They help improve soil fertility and increase crop production. They are a valuable source of income for me."

Although disappointed, the merchant kindly suggested another possibility.

"If you're looking for dry leaves, visit an elderly woman who lives at the edge of the village. She collects them every day."

Hope returned to their hearts.

The three disciples immediately went to meet the old woman. She welcomed them warmly, and they respectfully explained their guru's request.

The old woman smiled affectionately but replied, "My sons, I wish I could help you. Unfortunately, I cannot spare these leaves. I carefully sort different kinds of leaves because many of them possess medicinal properties. I prepare herbal remedies for people in the village. Every leaf serves a purpose."

Once again, the disciples returned empty-handed.

By now they had realized that something they had always considered worthless was, in reality, precious to many people.

Feeling disappointed, they walked back to the gurukul.

As soon as the guru saw them, he asked with a smile, "So, my children, have you brought my Guru Dakshina?"

The disciples lowered their heads in embarrassment.

One of them finally spoke.

"Gurudev, please forgive us. We could not fulfill your wish. We believed dry leaves were scattered everywhere and had no value. But wherever we went, people had already collected them because they found countless uses for them. The farmer used them as fuel, the merchant valued them for making organic fertilizer, and the elderly woman used them to prepare medicines. We never imagined that something so ordinary could be so valuable."

The guru smiled with satisfaction.

"My children," he said gently, "that is exactly the lesson I wanted you to learn."

He continued, "Never think that anything in this world is useless. Even dry leaves, which most people ignore, have many important uses. If such simple things have value, how can any human being or any creation of God be considered worthless?"

The disciples listened carefully.

The guru then turned to the disciple who had originally asked about life.

"My son," he said, "remember this truth throughout your life. Never insult or underestimate anyone because of their appearance, wealth, education, age, or social status. Every person has unique abilities and plays a meaningful role in society."

He continued, "Just as an ant and an elephant are both important in nature, and just as a tiny needle and a mighty sword each have their own purpose, every individual possesses unique worth. Wisdom lies in recognizing that value instead of judging people by outward appearances."

The disciple nodded thoughtfully.

The guru added another important lesson.

"When you meet others, always treat them with respect, kindness, compassion, and tolerance. Such behavior strengthens relationships and transforms life from a struggle into a celebration. When people value one another, society becomes harmonious."

He paused before speaking once more.

"If you choose to see life as a game, then play it fairly. Compete honestly, remain humble in success, and graceful in failure. Focus on improving yourself rather than defeating others. Excellence is achieved not by bringing people down but by continuously refining your own character and actions."

These words touched the disciple's heart deeply.

At last, he understood the true meaning of his guru's earlier answer.

Life becomes a struggle for those who walk without guidance. It becomes a game for those who understand its principles. But it becomes a celebration only for those who live with wisdom, gratitude, humility, and respect for every person and every creation around them.

The disciple bowed before his guru with folded hands and said, "Gurudev, today I have learned not only the value of dry leaves but also the value of every human being. From this day onward, I will never look down upon anyone or consider anything insignificant."

The guru blessed him with a smile, knowing that his lesson had finally reached the disciple's heart.

Moral of the Story: Nothing and no one in this world is truly worthless. Every person and every object have a unique purpose and value. Respect others, recognize their strengths, and never judge anyone by appearances.
