Mukti was one of the brightest and most well-behaved girls in her class. Her teachers appreciated her, and all her classmates loved her because she was always polite, helpful, and respectful. She was never rude to anyone and was always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need.

At home, Mukti's father paid special attention to her upbringing. Every evening, he would tell her inspiring stories filled with moral values. As a result, Mukti developed many good habits. She loved reading books, respected her elders, spoke kindly to everyone, and always tried to become a better person. Everyone in the neighborhood admired her, and she became an inspiration to other children.

One day, a new girl named Poonam joined Mukti's class.

Poonam was a cheerful and attractive girl, and soon she became friends with Mukti. However, unlike Mukti, Poonam had several bad habits. She was very fond of eating street food, chocolates, and other snacks sold outside the school. Whenever her mother gave her money for household shopping, she spent a part of it on junk food. If she did not have enough money, she secretly stole some from her mother's purse.

At first, Mukti refused whenever Poonam invited her to eat outside.

"Come, let's have some delicious snacks," Poonam would say.

Mukti would reply, "No, thank you. My mother prepares tasty food at home."

Poonam laughed and said, "Home-cooked food is so boring. You don't know what you're missing!"

Mukti smiled but politely declined.

After several days, Poonam once again tempted her.

"Mukti, don't you ever feel like eating something tasty? I'll pay today."

Mukti hesitated and finally agreed.

From that day onward, Mukti slowly developed a liking for market food. Every now and then, she accompanied Poonam to buy snacks and chocolates.

After a few days, Poonam noticed that Mukti never brought any money with her.

One day she asked, "Mukti, don't your parents give you pocket money?"

"They do," Mukti replied.

"Then why don't you bring it?"

"I save it. Sometimes I buy small things with it. I'm also saving money to buy a toy monkey that jumps when you press a button for my little brother's birthday."

Poonam laughed.

"What a waste! Why save money? It's much more fun to spend it every day on delicious food."

Mukti didn't say anything, but Poonam's words stayed in her mind.

Gradually, Mukti started spending her savings on snacks and chocolates. Soon, all the money she had saved was gone.

One day, she wanted to buy chocolates but had no money left.

While passing through the house, she noticed her mother's purse lying on the table.

She looked around carefully.

No one was watching.

With trembling hands, she quietly opened the purse and took out a five-rupee note.

Her heart was pounding with fear.

Although it was the first time she had stolen money, no one noticed.

This gave her confidence.

Whenever she ran out of money, she secretly took small amounts from her mother's purse. Since her mother was busy with household chores and her grandmother often remained occupied, no one realized that money was disappearing.

Mukti's parents occasionally wondered where the money was going, but whenever they asked the children, everyone denied taking it.

As time passed, Mukti's habit grew worse.

She even started giving away the food she bought to stray dogs or other children because the thrill of spending money had become more important than the food itself.

Slowly, stealing became a habit.

One day, several guests arrived at Mukti's house.

Her mother requested her father, "Please bring some fruits and other items from the market for our guests."

Her father quickly picked up his wallet and left.

At the fruit shop, he selected fresh fruits worth a considerable amount. When it was time to pay, he reached into his wallet.

To his surprise, only a few coins remained.

Just that morning, he had placed several hundred rupees inside.

Confused, he searched every pocket of his wallet again and again.

The money had vanished.

The fruit seller became impatient.

Finally, he said angrily,

"Sir, you should have checked your wallet before coming to the market. If you can't afford the fruits, why waste my time?"

The harsh words deeply hurt Mukti's father.

Feeling embarrassed and humiliated, he quietly left the shop and walked home with empty hands.

As soon as he reached home, he questioned everyone.

"Who took the money from my wallet?"

His wife was surprised.

"I didn't take it. There wasn't even time. I've been busy preparing food for the guests."

No one admitted taking the money.

That evening, after the guests had left, the family gathered together as they did every day.

Mukti's father sadly described how the fruit seller had insulted him in front of everyone.

Listening silently, Mukti's heart filled with guilt.

She realized that her father's humiliation had happened because of her.

Tears began rolling down her cheeks.

She could no longer bear the burden of her mistake.

Crying uncontrollably, she ran to her father, hugged him tightly, and sobbed,

"Father... please forgive me.

I was the one who stole the money from your wallet today.

It was because of my friendship with Poonam that I developed these bad habits. I started by spending money on unnecessary things, and then I learned to steal.

I promise I will never stay with Poonam again.

From today onward, I will never waste money on unnecessary things, never steal, and never tell lies.

Please forgive me this one last time."

Her mother became emotional and was about to scold her, but her father gently stopped her.

He lovingly placed his hand on Mukti's head and said,

"My dear daughter, when stealing becomes a habit, many other bad habits follow. To hide a theft, a person begins telling lies. One wrong action leads to another until good character is lost.

We always feel proud when our children perform good deeds. Your good behavior brings respect not only to you but also to our family.

Children are the greatest treasure in their parents' lives. People judge parents by the character of their children.

We know you are capable of becoming a good human being, and we believe you will keep your promise."

His voice choked with emotion as he spoke.

Hearing her father's loving words, Mukti cried even harder—not out of fear, but out of true remorse.

Those were tears of repentance.

From that day onward, she completely changed herself.

She ended her friendship with Poonam, stopped stealing, stopped lying, and never again wasted money on unnecessary things.

Instead, she worked hard to become the honest, kind, and responsible daughter her parents had always hoped she would be.

Her transformation filled her parents with pride and happiness, and Mukti learned a lesson she would remember for the rest of her life.

Moral of the Story

A person's character is greatly influenced by the company they keep. Even a single bad habit can lead to many others, while honesty, courage, and sincere repentance have the power to transform a person's life. Choosing good friends and following the guidance of parents helps build a life filled with respect, trust, and happiness.
